Northouse outlined the qualities of a transformational leader as ‘empowering’, a strong role model with high values, a listener and one who helps the organisation by helping others contribute to it. The 'additive” effect of transformational leadership is pulling together, the team and ideas, to reach performance beyond expectations.

Leadership and management ethics, gender and equality

Leaders such as Adolf Hitler and Nelson Mandela have very different ethics and values, their styles of leadership being totally dissimilar.  Yet both achieved success in recruiting many followers, therefore it could be assumed that the qualities of a successful leader may not always be highly attributed to their personality and beliefs which some theories advocate.

Gender and equality for those who have disabilities can be a barrier and challenge to those wishing to “break the glass ceiling”. Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell (2013) a professor at Oxford University feels that there are less women in positions of power due to cultural expectations in the country and has nothing to do with biology or brains (Burnell, J. 2013. Bidwantee Jugnauth , a disabled women who directs a company aiming to ensure equality for work and education talks about barriers to leadership. As a campaigner for disability, race, equality and women’s empowerment she states disability restricts progress sometimes due to very basic environmental barriers such as the inability to access buildings used for training (Jugnauth, B. 2013. cited in Professional Manager).
